The 2026-27 Virginia Tech Wrestling season is underway.
On this week’s edition of the Hokie Sports Insider, Jake Lyman sat down with head coach Tony Robie to preview the upcoming campaign, discuss the depth of this year’s squad and the team’s mentality heading into the season on this week’s episode of Hokie Sports Insider
🔼 The Wait Is Over. It’s been exactly 239 days since the Virginia Tech men’s basketball team took the court.
Tonight, that changes as the Hokies open the 2026-27 campaign with a visit from Coppin State at Cassell Coliseum.
With a mixture of key returners and talented newcomers, head coach Mike Young is back to help guide the Hokies toward postseason contention.
Tipoff on ACC Network Extra is set for 7 p.m. ET.
🔼 Grand Opening. Prior to Monday’s season opener, Carleigh Wenzel was honored for reaching 1,000 career points late last year.
When tip-off arrived, Wenzel added to that career total with a game-high 17 points as the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team opened the season with a dominant 85-39 victory over NC Central.
The veteran guard was one of six Hokies in double-figures as she was joined by Amani Jenkins (13), Jessica Dimaro (13), Leila Wells (12), Kaleo Anderson (11) and Samyha Suffren (11).
🔼 Just Getting Started. The 2026-27 season officially got underway for Virginia Tech wrestling this past Sunday with a strong showing at the annual Southeast Open in Salem, Va.
The Hokies claimed five individual titles, four runner-up finishes and 12 total podium finishes to open the season.
Leading the way for Tech were Aaron Seidel (133 pounds), Mac Church (165 pounds), Ryan Burton (174 pounds) and Jim Mullen (285 pounds), who each captured titles in the Open division. Freshman Alex Rozas added a championship at 125 pounds in the freshman/sophomore division.
🔼 Signed, Sealed, Delivered. Former Virginia Tech softball standout Rachel Castine is headed to the Sunshine State.
This week, Castine signed her first professional contract, inking a deal to join the Florida Vibe of the PSL.
A native of Chesapeake, the infielder earned All-Region accolades last spring, hitting a career-best .336 with 15 HRs and 47 RBIs for the Hokies.
🦃 MAKE YOUR PLEDGE
Virginia Tech Athletics and the Hokie Club have officially tipped off the 2026-27 Winter Pledge Per campaign, giving fans a high-energy way to back their favorite teams all season long.
Choose your team, set your pledge, and watch your support grow with every moment that matters from threes, to pins, to record-setting performances and postseason runs.
🤔 HOKIE TRIVIA
Tonight marks the second time in the past four seasons that Virginia Tech men’s hoops has squared off with Coppin State in a season-opener.
Back in 2023, the Hokies rolled past the Eagles, 100-55. Which former Hokie recorded his first career double-double in that game?
