Hokies Earn #9 Seed, Head To Austin To Battle Oregon In First Round
Good Morning, Tech Fans. Lace ‘em up, y’all! We’ve got some dancing to do!
What else are we covering in today’s edition, Hokies?
🏀 Dancin’ Machine
👟 Hardware Haul
🥍 Reese’s Pieces
🦃 And much, much more!
🔼 Dancin’ Machine. For the 14th time in program history and first since 2024, the Virginia Tech women’s basketball team is heading back to the national stage after earning an at-large bid to the Women’s NCAA Tournament, as revealed live on ESPN Sunday evening.
The Hokies (23-9, 12-6) will be the No. 9 seed in the Fort Worth Region 3, matching up with No. 8 seed Oregon (22-12, 8-10 Big Ten) on Friday, March 20 in Austin, Texas.
Tech hit several milestones during the season, finishing tied for fifth in the ACC with a 12-6 record and posting 12 or more conference wins for the fourth time in program history. The program also celebrated its 500th win inside Cassell Coliseum. At the helm, Megan Duffy becomes the fifth head coach to take the Hokies to the NCAA Tournament.
🔼 Hardware Haul. We sure hope that the Virginia Tech track & field squads left space in their luggage for some hardware because there’s a lot of it heading back to Blacksburg.
Every Hokie that competed at this weekend’s NCAA Indoor Championships in Arkansas brought home All-American honors, with the men’s team earning a top-20 overall finish.
Leading the way for Tech was, George Couttie, who earned All-American honors in both of his events. In the mile, Couttie delivered a strong performance to finish second in 3:59.30, just 0.36 seconds behind the winner. The finish marked Couttie’s first First Team All-American honor in the indoor mile.
🔼 Reese’s Pieces. Sophomore Reese Wallich picked a great time to have a breakout party as the second-year Virginia Tech lacrosse standout fired home four goals and tallied two assists to lead the Hokies to a second-straight win, a 15-6 road defeat of Florida State.
Sophia Trahan, Lauren Render and Mia Pozzi each had two goals apiece in the victory, while Malie Fallot collected six saves on the day.
🔼 Groovin’ Griff. In one of the best performances of his Hokie career, Griffin Stieg tossed six masterful innings to give Virginia Tech a 6-3 victory over #14 Virginia in the series finale of the three-game Smithfield Commonwealth Clash at Davenport Field this past weekend.
Stieg moved through the Cavaliers’ lineup with efficiency on Sunday, relying on strikeout magic and the sound defending behind him to carry a shutout deep into the fifth inning. Stieg’s report card featured seven strikeouts (season high), three hits and only one run.
Cheer on the Hokies your way with the Virginia Tech baseball 15-ticket flex plan, which is now on sale for the 2026 season. For just $90, enjoy the freedom to attend ACC home games on your schedule. Whether you want to witness marquee matchups like Virginia or share the experience with friends, the flex plan has you covered!
