🔼 Our State. The 12th-ranked Virginia Tech softball team staked their claim to this year’s edition of the Smithfield Commonwealth Clash after a dominant weekend in the circle for the Hokies propelled Tech to a series win over 21st-ranked Virginia.

Emma Mazzarone and Bree Carrico combined to allow just 11 hits and five earned runs in the three games, including a combined shutout (5-0) in the finale to clinch the series.

🔼 Bearin’ Down. The Virginia Tech lacrosse squad felt a little California love this past weekend, battling their way to a 10-5 road win over the Golden Bears of Cal on Saturday afternoon in Berkeley.

Lauren Render led the offensive attack with her sixth hat trick of the season for the Hokies, while Maggie Flanagan, Sarah Murrell and Mia Pozzi each tabbed two goals for Tech.

Defensively, Malie Follet posted her sixth game of the season with 10 or more saves, finishing with 12 in the contest.

🔼 Playoff Bound. One of the top candidates for the NBA’s Most Improved Player is playoff bound for the fifth time in his career.

Former Hokie standout Nickeil Alexander-Walker wrapped up his career-best regular season averaging 20.8 ppg, 3.7 apg and 3.3 rpg for the Atlanta Hawks, who secured the sixth seed in the playoff picture.

Alexander-Walker and the Hawks will square off with third-seeded New York in the opening round. Game 1 is set for Saturday night at 6 pm at Madison Square Garden.

🔼 Soarin’ High. It was a busy weekend for the Virginia Tech track & field squads competing at both the Spec Towns Invite and the Oklahoma Throws Series World Invitational. The Hokies, quite literally, soared above the competition throughout the performances.

The trio of Conner McClure, Maddox Hamm, and Layne Studer swept the podium for pole vault at the Spec Towns Invitational, with McClure finishing first, Hamm second, and Studer third. 

In the throws, Yekini Bowen continued to soar up Virginia Tech's all-time leaderboard for discus at the Oklahoma Throws Series World Invite. His 60.41m (184 feet 10 inches) throw moved him up from fourth to third in program history.
