Trio Of Hokies Make Tech Wrestling History at U20 Championships
Good morning, Tech Fam. We can’t wait to see Tobi’s future unfold in the next month!
What all are we covering in today’s edition, Hokies? Check it out below!

🏈 COUNTIN’ THE DAYS: 95 DAYS
Throughout the summer, we will be counting down the days
to the return of Virginia Tech Football this fall. The Hokies will host
VMI on September 5 at 7:30 p.m.
In the early 2000s, Jim Davis donned the #95 jersey and was a monster in the middle of the Virginia Tech’s defensive line.
Davis’ senior year (2004) was his breakout year, where he earned All-ACC accolades and helped lead the Hokies to the 2004 ACC Championship. During that year, his blocked field goal that was returned for a TD was the defining moment of Tech's 19-13 upset of #6 WVU.
🔼 All-American Guys. It’s tough to find something more exciting than putting on a Virginia Tech uniform.
But wearing the Red, White & Blue and representing Team USA is pretty close.
Three members of Hokie wrestling family will be doing just that as the trio of Aaron Seidel (61 kg), Bo Bassett (65 kg) and Ryan Burton (79 kg) made history this past weekend, each winning the U20 World Team Trials at their respective weight classes.
The trio will now head represent Team USA at U20 World Championships later this summer in Bratislava, Slovakia from August 16 through August 23.
🔼 Happy To Be Home. One of the greatest athletes, and the most credentialed heavyweight in program history, to ever don the orange and maroon returns to his alma mater. Virginia Tech wrestling head coach Tony Robie announced the addition of Ty Walz as assistant coach to complete the Hokies’ coaching staff ahead of the 2026-2027 season.
Walz returns to Blacksburg after a three-year tenure in Providence, Rhode Island where he was instrumental in the recruitment and development of Andrew Reall and Alex Semeneko. Both unranked recruits out of high school, Walz guided Reall to an individual Ivy League Conference title, 2026 NCAA Championship Round of 12 finish, and a tied program best 37-6 season record.
In addition, he coached Semeneko to an Ivy League finals appearance, an NCAA Championship berth, and finishing the season in the top ten pinfall list across the NCAA twice.
🔼 Mmm Mmm Good. Virginia Tech Athletics is kicking off summer the right way, with food. Starting Memorial Day, Taste of Tech Summer delivers free Hokie-themed gameday recipes straight to fans’ inboxes, all summer long.
From the fan-favorite Pulled Pork Mac & Cheese to the HokieBird's own Touchdown Turkey Chili, each recipe is built for Hokie Nation’s backyard grills, lake days, 4th of July cookouts, and every summer gathering in between, no matter where your summer plans take you.
At the end of the summer, subscribed fans will have the exclusive opportunity to submit their own favorite recipe for the chance to be featured. The grill is yours, Hokies.
🔼 Fueling The Complete Package. A foundational aspect of a person’s mental health derives from their nutrition. Clint Wattenberg knows that better than anyone.
Wattenberg serves as Virginia Tech's Associate Athletics Director of Sports Nutrition, overseeing the Hokie sports dietitian staff that supports more than 500 Hokie student-athletes as well as directly serving volleyball, wrestling and softball.
The Chico, California native arrived in Blacksburg in 2023, bringing a diverse collection of experiences: time as a member of Team USA’s freestyle national wrestling team, served as an eating disorder specialty nutritionist and sports nutrition coordinator at Cornell, and worked as director of performance nutrition for the UFC Performance Institute in Las Vegas.
