After months of excitement and a program shift that has given Blacksburg national relevance, Virginia Tech Football will finally take the field in competition as they host VMI on Saturday, Sept. 5 at 7:30 p.m. ET.
Head coach James Franklin and his squad will make their long-awaited debut in front of what is already a sold-out crowd in Lane Stadium.
Saturday’s contest serves as the first showing for a new era of Virginia Tech Football. To be prepared for what promises to be a history-defining matchup, here are Five Things to Know in order to make the most of your visit to Blacksburg this weekend.

🔼 Full House, Again. Another sell out is on the board.
On Tuesday, Virginia Tech Athletics that its Saturday, Oct. 17, Homecoming matchup and Maroon Effect against Georgia Tech is officially sold out, setting the stage for a packed Lane Stadium and a full day of Homecoming traditions and special events, including Alumni Bands Day, the Ranger Run, Educators Appreciation Day and Scouts & 4-H Day.
This is the third sellout of the season and there are limited options to catch the Hokies in action this fall.
Fans still seeking tickets to the sold-out Homecoming matchup can visit SeatGeek, the official fan-to-fan ticket marketplace of Virginia Tech Athletics, for available tickets.
🔼 Way To Go Weir. For the first time in her career, Virginia Tech women’s soccer standout Anna Weir has been named the ACC Offensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career.
The senior recorded the first multi-goal game of her career with a hat trick at William & Mary on Thursday. She followed that up by playing major role in Tech’s 2-1 win over No. 22 Georgetown with an assist on the game-winning goal.
She is the first Hokie to win ACC Offensive Player of the Week since Taylor Bryan in 2022.
🔼 All New Episode. It’s game week for Virginia Tech football and there’s no better way to get ready than with the Level 7 Podcast.
The Hokies face VMI Saturday night in the 2026 season opener. Virginia Tech broadcasters Bill Roth and Mike Burnop preview Saturday’s game between the Hokies and VMI which will kickoff the James Franklin era in Blacksburg.
Also, Tech tight end Luke Reynolds joins the show to discus the ’26 team and look ahead to the season opener.

Throughout the summer, we’ve been counting down the days to the return of Virginia Tech Football this fall. The Hokies will host VMI in front of a sold out Lane Stadium on September 5 at 7:30 p.m.

3️⃣ Days Away. The wait is almost over. Just three days separate us from the return of Hokie Football.
Bryan Randall put together one of the most memorable quarterback careers in Virginia Tech history from 2001-04. He finished his career with 6,508 passing yards and 48 touchdown passes, while adding 1,526 rushing yards and 11 scores.
Randall saved his best for his senior season in 2004, Virginia Tech’s first year in the ACC. He threw for 2,264 yards and 21 touchdowns, rushed for 511 yards and led the Hokies to a 10-2 regular-season record, the ACC championship and a berth in the Sugar Bowl. His performance earned him First-Team All-ACC honors, as well as ACC Player of the Year and ACC Offensive Player of the Year.
The West Virginia native helped bridge Virginia Tech’s transition from the Big East to the ACC and left Blacksburg as one of the program’s most accomplished quarterbacks. He was inducted into the Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame in 2015.
